Extended Time (120%)

Giving a student Extended Time (120%) means for a 60 minute exam a student would get 72 minutes.

Extended time on tests provides extra time to accommodate processing issues. This can be provided by the faculty in the classroom or at an alternate testing site. Extended time (120%) is given to accommodate for the side effects of medications which slow down processing, allow students time to refocus or to reread questions to ensure comprehension, and to allow students adequate time to use strategies so they are able to effectively demonstrate their knowledge. For students who are impulsive, it allows time for students to review and reflect on answers.



It is the responsibility of the student to notify the services for students with disabilities office if they need extended time on exams, and to inform faculty, at least a week prior to the exam, of the scheduled date and time.


If the exam is being administered by the services for students with disabilities office, faculty are responsible for providing the exam to the services office at least one day prior to the scheduled time whenever possible.


The services for students with disabilities office is responsible for notifying the faculty of the student's right to receive extended time, for administering the exam when faculty cannot, and for facilitating communication between faculty and the student.

Sensory Distractibility : Providing extended test time is necessary because students spend some of their time distracted by sights and sounds in the environment and need extra time to refocus.

Information Processing Speed : Extend time allows students with slower information processing speed to input, integrate and retrieve information.

Fatigue (Cognitive) : Allowing 120% extended time gives students with cognitive fatigue more time to process information as cognitive fatigue impacts the speed at which students process information.

Attentional Underfocus : Providing extended test time is necessary because students spend some of their time distracted by irrelevant thoughts and need extra time to refocus their attention.

Impulsivity : Extended time during testing gives students time to reflect on their answers.

Anxiety : Extended time allows students to use strategies to manage their anxiety during an exam.
